How to choose a link in bio tool: 8 questions

Dozens of link in bio tools exist, and most of them look alike in a screenshot. The differences show up later, when you hit a limit, want to leave, or notice what happens to your visitors. These eight questions help you compare tools before you commit.

1. Do I need an account?

Some tools need an email address and a password, and some don’t. An account can be useful for syncing across devices, but it’s also another login to lose and another place that holds your data. Decide whether you want one, and check what you get in return.

2. What’s free, and where is the limit?

Look at the number of links, themes, statistics and customisation you get for free. Many tools are free to start and limited later. Find the limit before you build your page, not after.

3. What does it cost over time?

A monthly fee that looks small adds up to a lot over years, while a one-time purchase doesn’t. Neither is automatically better, but you should know which one you’re agreeing to, and what happens to your page if you stop paying.

4. Who owns my page and my address?

Can you use your own short address or domain? Can you keep it if you move to another tool? An address that’s tied to one tool is hard to leave, because every profile and every printed QR code points to it.

5. Can I import and export?

Importing saves you from retyping everything when you start. Exporting, or at least being able to copy your links out, keeps you from being locked in. If a tool offers neither, you’ll be rebuilding by hand if you ever switch.

6. What does it do with my visitors?

Visit a page made with the tool, as a visitor. Do cookie banners or pop-ups appear? Are there ads on your page that you didn’t choose? Read what the tool says about tracking, because your visitors are the people you’re trying to treat well.

7. How fast is it, and how does it look on a phone?

Open a sample page on mobile data and see how long it takes. Check that buttons are big enough to tap and that text is readable outdoors. A page that looks lovely and loads slowly loses visitors before they see it.

8. How are my numbers counted?

Statistics are only useful if they’re honest. Find out whether bots and link previews are filtered out, whether clicks are counted for every visitor or only those who accept trackers, and how much personal data the counting involves.

A short test drive

  1. Make a real page with your real links. Don’t judge a tool on its demo.
  2. Open it on your phone, on mobile data, logged out.
  3. Change something and see how fast the update appears.
  4. Look for how you would leave: where is the export, or the delete button?

Red flags

  • Pricing that appears only after you’ve built your page.
  • No way to delete your page or your data.
  • Ads on your page that you can’t control or weren’t told about.
  • Vague answers about what is tracked.

How Klyka answers these

For transparency, here are Klyka’s answers. No account is needed. Five links and six themes are free, extra links and colour themes unlock with a short ad, and a few extras such as your own short address are one-time purchases, never a subscription. You can import a page from Linktree. Visitors never see an ad, and clicks are counted on a server without storing IP addresses. You can read more in our Linktree alternative page, or start with how to make a link in bio page.
